Wesleyan’s innovative Culture, Literature, and Media (CLM) major is one of the most distinctive programs in the country. It blends the critical thinking of traditional English and Communication studies with hands-on creative production skills tailored for 21st-century careers. Students explore how humans use symbols—language, images, and sounds—to create meaning and shape reality.
The program features a 15-hour core, plus the flexibility to pursue two 18-hour concentrations or one concentration with electives. Options include:
Literature & Creative Writing
Cross-Cultural Communication
Media & Society
Women, Gender, & Sexuality
Wesleyan’s program stands out as the first of its kind, offering a distinctive combination of breadth and focus that no other college matches. Designed to be fully customizable, it empowers students to shape their own academic path through flexible concentration options while blending traditional analysis with production-focused, hands-on learning. With a strong emphasis on intercultural communication and global understanding, the curriculum prepares students to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. Every senior completes a capstone experience—whether scholarly or creative—that integrates and showcases their learning, and built-in internship opportunities ensure meaningful experiential learning and professional engagement along the way.
CLM faculty bring a rich mix of disciplines and professional backgrounds, representing English, Communication, Media Studies, and Women’s Studies. Courses are discussion-based and emphasize collaboration, critical exploration, and mentorship. Faculty also guide students in research, publishing, and creative projects, helping each student develop a personalized academic and professional trajectory.
Faculty include: Joe Lease, Reginia Oost, Melanie Doherty, Deidra Donmoyer, and Melissia Williams.
Graduates of the CLM program enter the world with a unique combination of creativity, cultural awareness, and analytical expertise. They are equipped for leadership in global communication and cultural industries, as well as for graduate study in fields such as media, literature, or communication. Wesleyan alumnae from this program are known for their cultural competency, professional readiness, and ability to drive meaningful change in an evolving global landscape.
Wesleyan College is privileged to steward many arts and cultural events and share them with the community. Most are free and open to the public. Wesleyan art galleries are open M-F 1-5PM and on Wesleyan Market Saturdays from 10AM-2PM.
